The One I Have Come Here For

For the first time since the sun was born
the rain had gone away
and the moon and the wind and the sea
were one with the tide

and I went down to the shore
where the ocean met the land
I was one, I was me, I was life

The sun was me and I was the sun
and it lifted me up
and it touched my face, singing
you are the one I have come here for
as I stood and I watched the waves

for the first time since she left this world
I felt that there was something left
She somehow must have led me to this place.

Mother, I cried
Mother are you seeing all I see?
and the sea birds cried
and I knew that she was free from the pain of life

Mother, I cried
and I was happy somehow inside
for the first time since she died
I felt the world was still all right.

For the first time since the sun was born
the clouds had cleared away
and though the sky was still a little gray
I felt so shining bright

And when the stars came out that night
I felt that one was me
standing in the sea with my arms raised high in praise
I wondered
is there a god who made this place?

And the moon smiled down on the empty beach
and I felt her beside me
just out of reach
and the tears I cried added salt to the sea that surrounded me
but not sadly.

Mother, I cried
mother I can feel you in the air
and I think it was her stare that kept me warm
Mother, I cried
and I was happy somehow inside
For the first time since she died
I felt the world was still all right.

All this so long ago,
you'd think the sea would lose its magic
but some things never change

you are the one I have come here for.
