The Peninsula

I used to be an island
before I met you
now you constantly remind me
I am not an island
and I can't argue you
as I'm much too
tied and tangled up in you
to be an island anymore…

But I'm certainly still not
"mainland"
but more of a peninsula-
remaining rugged and solitary
on most of my shores
with only you grounding me
firmly constraining me
on one side still
connected to humanity

And sometimes I'm grateful
that you care enough
to love someone
who would rather be alone
than be hurt

And sometimes I'm resentful
that you won't let me be
an island anymore
