The Unseen Companion

I walked along the narrow alley
It walked along behind me
When I stopped, it stopped too
Yet like an echo, I had heard
Every footfall it had made

I waited in the darkened room
It waited there behind me
If I held my breath, it held its' too
Yet like an echo, I had heard
Every breath it had taken

I stood upon the quiet shore
It stood there behind me
If I ceased my tears, it ceased its' too
Yet like an echo, I had heard
Every sob that it had cried

I never had the courage to turn
To see what or whom stood behind
My unseen friend has left now
Yet I'll always remember what I heard
But what was it?

its deep, fascinating and a nice poem......
I like the mystery you leave in this piece! In the end, I too thought you might reveal what 'it' was. Although I'm not sure... I think you were speaking of 'hope.' Great read.
'Hope' Dear freind can come back at any time. Just watch out
