The Watchman

Poem By George Wootton

The old lighthouse on yonder reef still stands
warning pilgrims of the dangers in unseen lands.
Death lurks for the unwary pilgrims here
as ships drive onward toward destruction so near.
The gales blow hard the ravaging wind,
lives of unknowing pilgrims would surely now end.
The dutiful watchman on the high mast cries out
'They's a light on the waves yonder, lean-to lads, turn'er about! '
Just in time she steers clear of the reef just ahead
and sails safely onward, not one pilgrim lay dead!
Thank God for the lighthouse on the reef through the storm,
ever warning us pilgrims of the reef's deadly harm.
Oh dutiful watchman to your calling be true,
keep your eyes on the lighthouse,
guide us pilgrims safely through.
