This Rubble

Poem By Damilola Azeez

WHAT IS THIS RUBBLE,
THE REMAINS OF A ONCE SOLID BUILDING, THE WORK OF MANY DAYS, CAME DOWN WITHIN A SECOND.
LIKE WHEN YOU BLINK, AND A SHOOTING STAR IS GONE.

WHAT IS THIS RUBBLE
A MAN'S SWEAT, LABOR, DIM INISHED BY THOSE WHO KNEW NOT WHEN HE LABORED.
SOMETHING THAT EXISTED BEFORE, NO LONGER DOES.
WE STEP OUT BLINDLY, THROUGH THE RUBBLE,
MUD ON OUR FEET.

WHAT IS THIS RUBBLE,
PAYMENT OF A PAST SIN
REWARD OF DEEDS.
HOW DO WE GET OUT OF THIS RUBBLE,
WHEN THE BLIND LEADS THE BLIND
WHEN LOST SOULS, TOIL NIGHT AND DAY.
WE FALL IN AND OUT OF PITS, CONSOLING EACH OTHER.
WHO KNOWS WHAT LIFE WOULD BRING US, WHAT IS THIS RUBBLE.
