Time

Once time was a friend
It waited for me, silently
Hanging there in the air, still and serene
Idle summer days with no ending
Endless choices, with time to waste
So many things to imagine and plan
Places to visit adventures to have
Deciding, which dream to pursue
Stories to read, recount and record
Streams to fish and hills to climb
Where will I be in a forward year
Will I have married well
Are there children in my life
Do I have a faithful wife
Now later, time is watching me
It runs so very fast now
It records my mistakes
Keeps count of my failures
Reminds me when I forget
Challenges me when I attempt too much
Admonishes me when I fail
And laughs when I wish it were not
I try to watch with one eye
But it knows my weakness
It will not change the course
I am held lightly in the hand of time
And now fearing the clenched fist.
