To A Modern Defarge

Conversation goes around
While sharp above the verbal maze
Your eyes with malice secretly intent regard my own,
As with deliberate care you take the thread and
Start to knit. How then to reach the common battleground? I scarcely hear your voice:
The truth is not a noisy phrase;
But I shall not forget the grim vitality
That guides your hand upon the thread:
Withdrawn, and thought to be alone,
Content to watch the guillotine,
Aloof to all the pious words that you have spread.
