Poem Hunter
We Waves
(22 January 1849 – 14 May 1912 / Stockholm)

We Waves

WE, we waves,
That are rocking the winds
To rest--
Green cradles, we waves!

Wet are we, and salty;
Leap like flames of fire--
Wet flames are we:
Burning, extinguishing;
Cleansing, replenishing;
Bearing, engendering.

We, we waves,
That are rocking the winds
To rest!

This poem makes no sense. The waves are cradles, holding, rocking the winds. Then, the waves are flames, burning, extinguishing. Not even Salvadore Dali could make any sense out of this one. As with too many modern poems written since 1913, we need the poet's decoder ring.
