We Wear The Mask

We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,--
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,

We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries To thee from tortured souls arise. We sing, but oh the clay is vile Beneath our feet, and long the mile; very fine poem with deep insights and.... tony

This poem shows great wisdom and insight on many levels especially given the time period that it was written. I believe Mr Dunbar's parents were former slaves so it was vital to put on a happy face to survive. Fast forward to now, the words become even more relevant - we all have a mask of one kind or another. It's an amazing poem.

A great poem on many levels- the rhyme, the rhythm, the words used, the mounting tension, the emotion, the mask and how steeped with history it is- human beings have worn it since Adam and Eve all the way to our age and we wear it for much the same reason. This poem is so worth pondering on a midnight dreary

The poem is about the manner in which African Americans have been forced to endure and escape the treatment dealt to them by whites every day for centuries. The written words are sublime: the reading, not so much.

My class and I am applying this poem to Lord of the Flies and it works well on touching down on the sensitive topic of insanity which isn't so easily applied to most stories. All and all quite interesting.
