We Went From The Certain To The Probable To The Possible

Poem By Shalom Freedman

WE WENT FROM THE CERTAIN TO THE PROB ABLE TO THE POSSIBLE

We went from the Certain to the Probable to the Possible
We went from Assurance and Strength to Questioning and Doubt -
We are still here
But we are less hopeful and less optimistic-
We sense the odds are against us
And the chances of our surviving small-

We must do our best-
And it is our obligation to be courageous and wise and good-
But we sense it does not in the end only depend on us-
We know it is possible that God will save us,
But we now have experience of others not having been saved
Other Species Other peoples other people –

There is a long distance ahead
Perhaps an unending distance

Will we survive in it?
Only God knows.

All I Wanted Was Poems

I didn’t want other kinds of words
I wanted poems
Because they helped me feel more alive
They gave me an intensity

Nothing Tells Me How To Begin Again

Nothing tells me how to begin again
Or even how to try
I am too old now
And how can I expect to do at the age of seventy- five?

I Must Continue To Write

There will always be another poem
And with that poem- hope
However absurd-
So even if I despair
