What Happened

When you see your mother banged up, holding her left cheek
Your drunken stepfather is in the corner, looking oh so weak
WHAT HAPPENED!

When you see your sister, hospitalized, hooked up to machines
Your mom is talking to the doctor you try not to intervene
WHAT HAPPENED!

When you see your best friend on the concrete, now he’s dead
There’s a thought saying, “I told him so” in the back of your head
WHAT HAPPENED!

When you search your brother’s drawer, you see needles and drugs
You don’t want to tell your mother because he’ll squash you like a bug
WHAT HAPPENED!

When you see your Grandmother’s name in the newspaper’s obituaries section
You try to hold back your tears, but she was the only one who showed you affection
WHAT HAPPENED!

The incidents in life don’t end the same way
The incidents in life happen every day
But the same question is here to stay
WHAT HAPPENED!
