What You Have To Do

you don't have to work all day every day
(they want you to)
you don't have to work all night
(they want you to)
you don't have to work at all
you do have to shepherd time

you don't have to buy a car a house
(they want you to)
you don't have to buy gadgets
(they want you to)
you don't have to buy at all
you do have to shepherd time

you don't have to marry to breed
(they want you to)
you don't have to settle down
(they want you to)
you don't have to do as you damn well please
you do have to shepherd time

you don't have to look at the stars
(they don't want you to)
you don't have to sing songs of your own
(they don't want you to)
or spend time idling, talking with strangers
you do have to shepherd time

you don't have to ignore calamity
(they don't want you to)
you don't have to walk among trees
(they don't want you to)
or spend time just sitting and resting
you do have to shepherd time

shepherd of all that's under your skin
and nothing without,
you do have to shepherd time.
