When The Universe Turns Cold

When the universe turns cold
and we are reminded we are old.
No longer the dreams of childhood,
but the adult world of pain understood

The fairy tales they told us
when we were young and there was no fuss.
We laughed at them then and played on.
Not aware, not knowing what really went on.

Here now so close to the end.
Aching bones and joints, never to mend.
Relief now weak breath, death in sight
Lips closed, still. we tried so hard to be right.
