Why The Caged Bird Sings

This bird sings not for you or I

He sings of sunshine, open sky

He sings of migrating, the worm he would catch

Yet no one comes to open his latch.

His throat swells with emotion and song spills out

And those that can hear him have no doubt

That he sings for them with joy in his song.

To fly with wind, to bathe in the brook

These are his birthrights that we casually took.

Like a picture we hung him at just the right height

For the songs he would sing for our delight

This bird sings not for you or I,

This bird sings as he can not cry.

He sings for his mother on her aviary nest

For the sadness she feels in her tiny breast

Of children who will never fly

And like her in a cage will die

This bird sings not for you or I

This bird sings as he can not cry.
