Wild Terrain

Wild terrain, tangled and overgrown;
this is where light plays, creating endless tones
of dark-green, yellow-green,
gray-beige, vines and leaves

Climbing and twining accented occasionally by
daisy-like things, yellow butterfly wings,
magenta beautyberries bright delight.

Mazes of slash pine branches touch the sky
as sharp toothed saw palmetto stems recline

Breezes flow through red maple shade,
over jagged hollow tree bases

Swamp ferns and strap ferns thrive
along with pond apples, strangler figs
and epiphytes.

The rustling beneath is from armadillos,
at home in this environment;
I, however, much prefer,
in such habitat, not to spend the night.
