Winternag

Winternag
O koud is die windjie
en skraal.
En blink in die dof-lig
en kaal,
so wyd as die Heer se genade,
le die velde in sterlig en skade
En hoog in die rande,
versprei in die brande,
is die grassaad aan roere
soos winkende hande.

O treurig die wysie
op die ooswind se maat,
soos die lied van ‘n meisie
in haar liefde verlaat.
In elk' grashalm se vou
blink ‘n druppel van dou,
en vinnig verbleek dit
tot ryp in die kou!

Is there a version of this poem in which the second line is En hy huil oor die velt wyd en vaal. I have a memory of that from high school Afrikaans as tweede taal in SA in the late 70s
Winter Night O cold and fine is the wind, and bare and shining in the dim light are open fields in starlight and shade, as wide as the Lord's grace. And high on the ridges, spreading like fire, the grass seed moves like beckoning fingers. O how sad the melody on the east wind's measure, as the song of a girl forsaken in her love. In the fold of each grass blade a drop of dew is shining, and rapidly fades to frost in the cold!
