Words Of An Opressed Soul

Poem By James Royster

You came here in search of a dream.
I came here with no hope, or so it would seem.

You came here looking for money.
You brought me with you because I looked funny.

Your seed is born into opportunity.
My seed is born into hate and tortured by scrutiny.

You have no idea what it is like to walk in my shoes.
Everyday I wake up it's as if you want me to lose.

I wonder what it would be like if you were in my place?
Can you look me in the eye or will you retreat from my face?

What is it about me that cause you to have all these fears?
Do you feel my pain? Can you see my tears?

I weep for you because in death you feel alive.
No matter what obstacles you throw at me...
I survive!

A Different Perspective

I see intelligence, knowledge and wisdom beyond his age.
Society sees anger, hatred, and eyes filled with rage.

I see someone who is full of success.

God's Masterpiece

I tried to write about you, but the words
weren't special enough.

I tried to sing about you, but the notes

I have fought my battles and overcame them all,
But the current task is not something small.

It encompasses all of me.

How can I smile when 2/3 of me have been
oppressed? Yet I am told to just hold my head
up and do my best.

I have no reason to smile, no reason to cry.
No reason to live, no reason to die.

I have no reason to laugh, no reason to pout

The Most Beautiful Thing

I've seen a flower whose petals refuse to fall.
I've seen a woman who looks like a beautiful queen doll.

I've seen the majestic eagle soar across the sky.
