Your Side Of The Bed

I lay staring at an expanse
Of sheets and blankets
Known as “your side of the bed”

I can still hear you breathe
And feel the warmth of your body
Laying beside me.

I close my eyes to smell you
And pretend that your pillow
Safely cradles your head.

I gently fall into a dream
And into your waiting arms
A refuge from my lonely day

So cruel the act of awakening alone
But I know you will be there
The next time I am allowed to slumber.
