Man is the measure of all things; of that which is, that it is; of that which is not, that it is not.
Protagoras or Plato (c. 490-421 B.C.), Greek philosopher. Plato, Theaetetus 152a, trans. by J.L. Saunders. It is not agreed among scholars whether the statement was really made by Protagoras or has been put into his mouth by Plato. Plato is the oldest and most famous of the Greek Sophists.
