Yeats Obituary - from The New York Times - January 29,1939: _________________________________________________ Nice, France, Jan.29. - The death of William Butler Yeats, famous Irish poet and playwright, occurred yesterday near Mentone. Mr. Yeats, who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1923, was 73 years old. ********************************** Mentone, France, Jan.29 (AP) . - Mr. Yeats died in the little French Riviera town of Roquebrune, after a short illness, at a boarding house where he and his wife had been staying. He will be buried tomorrow at Roquebrune. It was expected, however, that eventually the poet's body would be removed to his native Ireland. Mr. Yeats arrived in Roquebrune early last month in ill health. He suffered repeated heart attacks, and was able to take only short walks in the gardens of the house where he stayed. He had been confined to his bed since Tuesday. _________________________________________________

“Yeats matters today in the way that Shakespeare or Jonson or Dickinson matter, ” says the critic and poet James Longenbach. “He's inseparable from what we understand the medium of the English language is capable of producing on the page.” TS Eliot called Yeats one of those few whose history is the history of their own time, who are a part of the consciousness of an age which cannot be understood without them.

W.B. Yeats is one of the closest poets (friends) to me. Words are insufficient to describe his poetry and legacy - you just have to live (and love) him...

Classic and modern touches in his poetry. A Bronze Head is a very good poem of his.

We made this short film, inspired by Yeats' 'When you are old and grey', here: http: //www.youtube.com/watch? v=qyDEEQoVqjY&feature=plcp The film explores the power of poetry and the experience of first love, using Yeats' work as its text. Hope you enjoy.
